I would prefer this to be answered by a real cop?

hi, i am considering entering the field of law enforcement but i am wondering about police units. when you are hired on do you get to choose your unit? because i'd like to do criminal work much more than traffic enforcement and narcotics and things like that. I want to deal with suspicious persons, domestic fights, burglary, that sort of thing.
