I saw a musician in an afro-beat band use it to make chime sounds. He dangled it from its string and bobbed it up and down to make a chime sound. It's a hard ball wrapped in a net that has small tamborine cymbals attached to the net on the sides. The cymbals must bang against the hard ball at the same time to create the sound.
