Is it necessary to remove the outdrive before removing a 3.0 4 cyl mercruiser engine?

I have a Chris Craft with a Mercruiser (small block Chevy) and I had to pull the outdrive out before I pulled the engine. I had 4 bolts on the outside, then the outdrive came straight out. Yours may be different.
